Most foreigners living in Algeria do not have a problem with security, but feel welcomed and cared for by the local move around freely. However, it is a fact that there still is terrorist-activities going on in certain areas (especially in the mountains) and some fundamentalists see foreigners as a threat. It is wise not to travel on empty roads at night and be careful when traveling through waste areas in the south.
Theft and especially pick-pocketing is a problem. It is therefore advisable to keep valuables hidden while walking in public places.
