According to the Algerian newspaper "El Quotidien" (03/11/08)
there were 13.308 private and public importers in Algeria in the end of June 2008.
According to the National center of custom statistics (CNIS), 11.370 of these are private importers (85%)
The same source reveals that most of the importers are dealing with industrial equipment (5,701 private and
759 public importers).
Other important sectors include
- Consumable, non-food products: 2,190 private, 636 public
- Semi-finished products: 1,021 private, 250 public
- Food products: 875 private, 75 public
The total amount of products imported is 18 billion dollars for the first trimester 2008,
13 billions by private importers and 4,8 billions by public.
Algeria is still battling the large number of un-official importers that neither pay taxes,
nor change their money at the local banks.
